About

Flours and Fibers: A History

Flours And Fibers was founded by sisters Laura St. Louis (that's me!) and Emily Oman in the summer of 2009. I  had just moved to Davenport after graduating from Michigan Tech to start my career as an environmental engineer. Emily came to stay with me during her summer break from studying ethno-botany at UW Stevens Point.

We set up shop at the Freight House Farmers' Market in Davenport, Iowa, and peddled our wares, mostly baked good and handknits. We had a blast working at the market, and people really seemed to enjoy our creations! Emily's caramels were such a hit that I continued to sell them long after she returned to school!

For two summers Emily and I worked at the market. We met all kinds of interesting people, many of whom were involved in the fiber and knitting community in the Quad Cities. Emily even scored a an internship at Miss Effie's farm! Eventually, I landed a gig moonlighting at the fabulous LYS, Knit & Knot. I had taught a few classes elsewhere, but I really started to get into teaching and designing after I started working there.

It's been 11 years, and a lot has changed, but I'm as passionate about knitting as I've ever been!

I am always happy to provide pattern support through Ravelry (userID: floursandfibers) or by email at floursandfibersATgmailDOTcom.
